Age of the Sky Jellies

Updated: May 17

What I would give for grey skies and dark days, for the world's end to be as it was often described, full of destruction and gloom, where the lands would become void of colour and a sense of fear hid in the shadows of every empty alley and hollow street. We guessed the destruction part right at least. I hide in the crowd of other survivors, watching the skies of a thousand hues, almost mesmerised by the different colours and how much they all seemed to dominate the world above. Blobs of yellows, greens and blues, a collection of threatening reds and blacks and the strangest of whites and greats as they provided a rainbow of fear that would be illuminated by the sun they blocked out, causing a cluster of prismatic rays to rain down upon us.

It was beautiful, truly captivating but incredibly terrifying too. At first, we thought this was some miracle, a natural marvel as these large, jellyfish creatures were found floating through the streets, it wasn't until we saw how many there were that the worry began to show up. They seemed harmless though, so long as you avoided touching them, then you'd be safe.

That was before they began to change, their soft and squishy exterior began to grow hard, scaled, sharp and threatening. The Jellyfish themselves didn't seem to be trying to hurt us humans, they weren't seeking us out in our shelters, but their numbers, their size and the way they aimlessly floated through the air at all different speeds, they became a terror we never knew. They would float into buildings with such power that the steel framework couldn't compare, some had scales and some dripped an acid so strong it left bubbling pools of death in it's wake.

They tore down our cities, melted our forest and this was just the start. It wasn't long until we were forced to live beneath the earth as they occupied all that we had taken for granted. Weather became a pick and mix of unnatural disasters, from acidic rain pouring down from the skies, to giant scales that had somehow chipped away from their exteriors, dropping down and causing a world of pain to anybody nearby. I remain here, surrounding by a collection of survivors who were foolish enough to think that "Today is the day we take our world back!" An imbecile of muscles and hair gel stands before us all, spewing some nonsense speech to rally his troops as they cheer and shake their fist in the air.

Their words drowned out by the constant ringing that has echoed in my ears ever since the day I made contact with the jiggling reproductive lords. Idly, my fingers trace the scar that coils up and around my arm, remembering that day like it was just yesterday.

I was always fascinated by these beautiful beast, intrigued by their mystical ways and when I came across a small one who's scales had weighted it down enough that it was trapped by some construction netting, I did all I could to set it free, to be up close and personal with the creature, but I pushed my luck and got too comfortable.

I learnt the hard way that these creatures couldn't be reasoned with but deep down, I knew they weren't the problem. Today was not the day we take our world back, but it could be the day I prove that these creatures, were just as lost as we were. Today is the day, I capture one and show the others it means us no harm.
